Because of the love we have received from Jesus, it is our vision to share our food with the hungry and provide warmth and clothing to the homeless. The vision sparked into life about 15 years ago when the church family moved to the Prayerhouse building at Newstead Road. We wanted to offer practical love to vulnerable people in the area without asking anything in return.
Love you can taste!
A team of volunteers from the Prayerhouse began feeding the rough sleepers and the vulnerably housed of Weymouth & Portland. The service we offer has now grown from two hot meals a week, to four, plus showers, clothes, a Nurse Practitioner, a Community Mental Health Team access worker and our own Outreach Worker. We are able to offer support in many areas: housing, health, mental health and advocacy.
Homeless, but not friendless
We have a large team of volunteers, (we have no paid staff) most of whom have had first hand experience of addiction and/or homelessness. We work alongside the professionals and statutory bodies, to help our clients (our friends) take care of their basic needs, physical, mental and emotional. We have pastoral support from the Prayerhouse to help with spiritual needs as well. We are continually working one to one with clients, often alongside several other agencies to support and aid in their recovery from addiction and life on the streets.
Soul Food welcomes the involvement of people as volunteers, irrespective of their faith, but maintains the values of the Christian Faith as its foundation and motivation.
